While burial was once the only choice, there has long been an option for burial or cremation in this country. Cremations soon became the most preferred choice with now over 70% of people choosing cremations. Cremations are usually the simpler and more economical option.
For most people burial or cremation is a personal choice, but religious or cultural grounds can often play a large part in choosing between the two. Muslims, for example, choose burial for religious reasons. Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs are cremated. For the Jewish faith, the decision is influenced by the form of Judaism observed – Orthodox Jews do not allow cremation. For most Christians, cremation is acceptable and common practice, although the Catholic Church still predominantly choose burial.
